Top Tennis Players Withdraw from Toronto Masters
Ahead of the US Open, Jannik Sinner, the recent Wimbledon champion, along with Novak Djokovic, a 24-time Grand Slam victor, and Jack Draper, Britain’s top-ranked player, have all opted out of the Masters 1000 event in Toronto, according to international reports released on Sunday.
Sinner, currently ranked number one globally, stated that he made the decision to withdraw from the competition after consulting with his team, citing the need to recuperate from a right elbow issue.
Notably, Sinner secured his first Masters 1000 title in Toronto back in 2023.
“Securing the title in Toronto two years prior marked the genesis of an exceptionally significant period for me. However, after conferring with my team, I need to prioritize recovery,” Sinner explained.
Jannik Sinner triumphed over the defending champion, Carlos Alcaraz, with scores of 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 in an electrifying final held on July 13. This victory not only earned him his inaugural Wimbledon men’s title but also served as a form of retribution following his defeat to Alcaraz in Paris.
Novak Djokovic attributed his withdrawal from the Canadian tournament, where he has been victorious on four occasions, to a groin injury.
Draper is sidelined due to an arm injury, which is expected to keep him off the court for at least a month leading up to the US Open at the close of August.
Draper is now expected to be absent from both the Canadian Open and the Cincinnati Open, with his sights set on achieving full fitness in time for the US Open.
The British No. 1’s most recent appearance was at Wimbledon, where he was defeated by Marin Cilic in the second round.
Jack Draper shared the news of his withdrawal through a social media update, assuring fans that his injury is not severe but emphasizing his need to be in optimal condition for the remainder of the season.
“Following Wimbledon, I sustained a minor injury to my left arm. While it’s not serious, I must ensure complete recovery for the rest of the season,” he conveyed.
“Regrettably, I will be unable to participate in Toronto and Cincinnati.
Looking forward to seeing everyone in NYC!”
