Sindh Police Issues Ultimatum on Gutka and Mawa Consumption

KARACHI: In an effort to eradicate detrimental health habits that negatively impact the police force’s image, Sindh Police has mandated a 10-day deadline for its personnel to cease the use of gutka and mawa.

A letter from AIG Imran Qureshi to the Sindh IGP stated, “It has been observed that a significant number of police officers regularly consume gutka/mawa. The relevant authorities have addressed this matter seriously, voicing substantial apprehension regarding the ongoing involvement of law enforcement personnel in such damaging and unprofessional behaviors.”

The correspondence emphasized that these habits not only jeopardize the well-being and effectiveness of the officers but also damage the reputation of the police department.

AIG Qureshi’s notification, directed to the Sindh IGP, instructs the preparation of a roster containing the names of all police personnel identified as having a gutka/mawa addiction. It also delivers an official warning to these individuals to “voluntarily discontinue the utilization of these substances” within the specified 10-day period.

Furthermore, the senior officer has advocated for the implementation of suitable rehabilitation measures. Failure to adhere to this directive will result in disciplinary actions, potentially leading to dismissal from service.

The letter further noted that “A comprehensive report detailing the actions implemented, including the identities, titles, and measures initiated against the individuals in question, must be submitted to the office of the DIGP Establishment, Sindh, Karachi, every two weeks for subsequent departmental proceedings.”
