Sindh Government Advocates for Solar Tax Exemption on Low Electricity Consumption
Syed Nasir Hussain Shah, the Sindh Minister for Energy, Planning, and Development, has affirmed that the Sindh Government is dedicated to securing an exemption from the solar tax for electricity consumers using up to 300 units. He mentioned proactive discussions with the federal government to achieve this goal. He shared these remarks while serving as the guest of honor at the National Environmental Sustainability Conference and Awards Ceremony hosted by the Youth Parliament at a local hotel.
Rizwan Jaffer, Chairman of Youth Parliament, Reham Khan, among other distinguished guests, addressed the gathering.
Emphasis on Green Energy
During his address, the Energy Minister underscored the critical need for embracing green energy solutions, highlighting Sindh’s pioneering role in this transition. He noted the province’s abundant wind and solar energy resources, coupled with rapid progress in the renewable energy sector. He also mentioned the distribution of solar panels to underserved and off-grid households in Sindh’s remote regions. These efforts are driven by the vision of Chairman Bilawal Bhutto and the directives of the Chief Minister of Sindh, with the Sindh Energy Department actively spearheading these initiatives.
Individual Contributions to Development
Nasir Shah emphasized that while the government is committed to the country and province’s advancement, individual contributions are equally vital. Sindh stands out as the sole province benefiting significantly from carbon credits from international bodies, owing to the mangrove plantations along its coastal areas, championed by Chairman Bilawal Bhutto. The planting of one million mangroves in a single day has also been recognized by Guinness World Records.
He voiced his satisfaction with the Youth Parliament’s quick advancement, attributing it to their commitment and diligence. He also noted the strong youth representation at the event, adding that the Sindh government aims to introduce significant legislative measures for the youth in the assemblies; however, constitutional and legal limitations pose challenges.
Nasir Shah further highlighted ongoing initiatives to enhance treatment facilities and infrastructure in Karachi on a priority basis. Dismissing claims that Karachi is unliveable, he emphasized the consistent influx of people from across the country into the city, unlike Sindh residents, who generally remain in the province.
He said that since 2013, Karachi and Sindh have experienced unfair allocation of resources from the federal government, currently receiving only 2% to 3%, which is unjust to the province. The Sindh Government is now contemplating the distribution of electric scooters to working women, following the introduction of electric buses. Furthermore, plans for specialized training programs and the issuance of driving licenses for women are being considered.
The Minister for Energy concluded the ceremony by presenting awards.
