Gill Overhauls Yousuf’s Record in England Series

MANCHESTER: Indian Test captain Shubman Gill has etched his name into cricket’s annals, surpassing Mohammad Yousuf’s long-held record for the most runs accumulated by an Asian batter in a Test series held in England.

Gill, who assumed the captaincy on May 24, accomplished this feat on Day 4 of the ongoing fourth Test against England at Old Trafford, during the second session.

He required a mere 13 runs in the second innings to eclipse Yousuf’s previous record of 631 runs, achieved by the Pakistani legend across seven innings during the 2006 tour of England.

Most Runs in a Test Series in England (by an Asian Batter)

Shubman Gill’s remarkable form continues, highlighted by three centuries in his initial two Tests as skipper.

Should he score a minimum of 37 additional runs in this innings, he will also surpass Virat Kohli’s record of 655 runs – the highest number of runs by an Indian captain in a Test series against England. Kohli set this benchmark during the 2016 home series.

Yashasvi Jaiswal currently holds the all-time record for the most runs in a Test series against England by an Asian batter, amassing 712 runs during the 2024 home series under Rohit Sharma’s leadership.

Shubman Gill has established a new standard by recording the most runs by an Asian batter in a single Test series within SENA countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia).

The 25-year-old Indian captain boasts an unbeaten 632 runs in the ongoing 2025 series in England, exceeding Mohammad Yousuf’s 631 runs from the 2006 tour.

Gill now tops a distinguished list featuring legends such as Virat Kohli and Rahul Dravid. While Kohli’s 692 runs during the 2014–15 Australia tour remain the highest by an Asian player in SENA conditions overall, Gill holds the record specifically for England.

At the close of play on Day 4, India stood at 174/2, still trailing by 137 runs.

The unbroken third-wicket partnership between Gill (87*) and KL Rahul (78*) amounted to 174 runs, rescuing India after Chris Woakes dismissed both openers for no score in the first over.

Earlier in the day, England resumed at 544/7. Jasprit Bumrah quickly dismissed Liam Dawson, but Ben Stokes (141) and Brydon Carse (47) put together a frustrating 93-run ninth-wicket stand.

Ravindra Jadeja eventually broke the resistance, finishing with figures of 4/143. Bumrah and Washington Sundar each claimed two wickets, while Anshul Kamboj and Mohammed Siraj took one wicket apiece.

With the series and several records at stake, India will rely on Gill and Rahul to maintain their resilience on the final day at Old Trafford.
