Woakes’ Injury to be Re-evaluated After Series, Says ECB
LONDON: The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced Friday that fast-bowling all-rounder Chris Woakes will miss the remainder of the fifth Test against India due to a shoulder injury.
The announcement was made via a social media post featuring Woakes, with the message: “Chris Woakes set to play no further part in the fifth Test.”
According to the ECB’s caption, Woakes will undergo a thorough examination at the end of the series.
Woakes sustained the injury on the first day while chasing a ball from mid-off. He slipped on the damp outfield while attempting to regain his footing, resulting in an awkward landing on his left shoulder.
The 36-year-old immediately showed signs of pain and received medical attention on the field from team physio Ben Davies. He was later seen using his jumper as a makeshift sling while returning to the dressing room.
During the opening day, Chris Woakes bowled 14 overs, securing figures of 1 for 46. He has been an important component of England’s bowling attack throughout the series, taking 11 wickets at an average of 52.18 across 181 overs.
Significantly, he and India’s Mohammed Siraj are the only pace bowlers to have played in all five matches of the series.
His absence creates a shortage in England’s bowling lineup, particularly given the relative inexperience of the other pace bowlers—Atkinson, Jamie Overton, and Josh Tongue—who possess a combined total of only 18 Test caps.
