Shaheen Aims to Emulate Johnson at the Gabba
MELBOURNE: Pakistan’s prominent fast bowler, Shaheen Shah Afridi, voiced his ambition to replicate the bowling prowess of former Australian pace icon Mitchell Johnson at the renowned Gabba Stadium on Monday.
In a video shared by the Big Bash League on its X account (formerly Twitter) on Monday, Shaheen discussed his sentiments about performing at the Gabba. He mentioned that the venue evokes special memories for him, particularly recalling Johnson’s remarkable bowling performances in 2013.
“When the ‘Gabba’ is mentioned, numerous memories come to mind. I have participated in several international matches at the Gabba. I vividly remember Mitchell Johnson’s spell in 2013 — it was truly exceptional,” Shaheen remarked.
Afridi, poised to represent Brisbane Heat in the forthcoming BBL season, is eager to leave his mark on the same ground where Johnson famously dominated with his pace and bounce.
“The Gabba is consistently an excellent venue for fast bowling, and the enthusiastic crowd enhances the experience. I commenced my Test career at the Gabba, and during our recent match there, the spectators were incredibly supportive. I am excited to relish the atmosphere once more, and I aspire for a successful tournament for our team,” he added.
Moreover, Shaheen Shah Afridi was selected as the top pick in the Big Bash League (BBL) Season 15 Draft, which occurred last week, with Brisbane Heat securing the services of the left-arm fast bowler.
The highly anticipated BBL player draft took place earlier today, with six of the eight franchises expressing interest in acquiring national team players. Among them was wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan, who was chosen as the third platinum pick, following Shaheen as the first and England’s Luke Wood as the second.
The 25-year-old was the first overall selection in the draft, chosen under the platinum category by Brisbane Heat.
While this marks his inaugural appearance in the BBL, he has previously participated in prominent leagues such as the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), ILT20, and The Hundred.
