Karachi Experiences Light Showers as Sindh Remains on High Alert for Urban Flooding
Following heavy rainfall on Sunday that prompted urban flood warnings, Karachi experienced light showers Monday morning, according to meteorological reports.
Scattered drizzles were observed across various areas, including DHA, Korangi Road, Shahrah-e-Faisal, Burns Road, MA Jinnah Road, Qayyumabad, Mehmoodabad, Manzoor Colony, and Baloch Colony.
Light rainfall also occurred on University Road, Jamshed Road, Jehangir Road, Yaseenabad, and Gulshan-e-Iqbal.
Weather forecasts suggest the drizzle might persist for 30 to 60 minutes. Forecasters indicated that increased rainfall could occur later in the day if the weather pattern shifts westward.
Tharparkar experienced ongoing intermittent showers, while Larkana and neighboring regions were hit by significant rainfall.
Khairpur and its surrounding areas also faced substantial rain accompanied by thunder and lightning. Kot Diji and the Aror hills experienced downpours that caused local drainage systems to overflow. Kashmore had light showers, resulting in pleasant weather conditions.
The PMD had previously cautioned that Sunday’s heavy rainfall in Karachi could lead to urban flooding in vulnerable areas.
Gulshan-e-Hadeed, Malir Halt, Rafa-e-Aam, Bahria Town, and areas near the M9 Motorway are experiencing light to heavy rainfall.
The Met Office stated that rain-bearing cloud formations are currently situated over eastern sections of Karachi. “These clouds may extend further into the city,” it noted.
The Met Office has predicted “unusual downpours” in Sindh over the next two days.
The weather authority also stated that the “depression” over southwest Rajasthan and Gujarat in India has intensified into a “deep depression”.
The Met Office predicts that the “deep depression” will likely move into southeastern Sindh within the next 24 hours.
Heavy rainfall is expected in Tharparkar, Umarkot, and other Sindh cities until September 10 due to this weather system.
Karachi is also anticipated to experience intermittent heavy rainfall with thunderstorms and strong winds during this period.
Sindh government representative Saadia Javed reported on Monday that the recent rainfall in Karachi last month resulted in a crisis, with the city receiving 200 millimetres of rain in a matter of hours.
She mentioned that the entire province is presently under a state of heightened alert due to the possibility of urban flooding and that KMC staff is also on high alert.
She advised citizens to avoid unnecessary travel.
Saadia Javed added that the Sindh government will decide on school closures after considering recommendations from NDMA and the Met Office.
