England Advances to Euro 2025 Semi-Finals with Victory Over Sweden

ZURICH: Despite facing significant challenges, England’s women’s team, led by Sarina Wiegman, secured a thrilling 3-2 penalty shootout victory against Sweden, propelling them into the Euro 2025 semi-finals. Wiegman expressed that the match was unlike any she had experienced before in her career.

The Lionesses demonstrated resilience, coming back from a two-goal deficit to tie the game 2-2 at Letzigrund, before clinching the win in a dramatic penalty shootout.

Acknowledging the team’s initial struggles, Wiegman noted that they aimed for a more assertive start but found themselves on the back foot early on.

“Our intention was to begin the match with greater momentum,” Wiegman commented. “The setback of conceding an early second goal put us in a difficult position. We reassessed our approach, seeking ways to bolster the team. Subsequently, our performance improved, although we initially struggled to create substantial opportunities. We maintained possession more effectively in the second half.”

Wiegman’s strategic substitutions proved pivotal in turning the tide of the match.

Chloe Kelly’s introduction in the 78th minute injected fresh energy into the attack, leading to England’s first goal in the 79th minute, with Kelly providing the assist. Substitute Michelle Agyemang then scored from close range, leveling the score.

During the penalty shootout, goalkeeper Hampton emerged as the hero, saving two crucial penalties, while Bronze confidently converted the decisive spot-kick.

Wiegman confessed to moments of doubt during the match, admitting that she feared elimination on several occasions. “There were probably three times today where I thought our journey was ending,” Wiegman stated.
