Ryne Sandberg Shares Health Update Amid Cancer Battle
Chicago Cubs icon Ryne Sandberg shared a moving health update on Wednesday, revealing his ongoing battle with cancer as he cherishes moments with family and friends.
The Hall of Famer used Instagram to connect with supporters and the baseball community, expressing both gratitude and strength.
“I wanted to provide an update on my health. These past months have presented challenges as I undergo regular treatment,” Sandberg communicated.
“While my fight continues, I am committed to embracing each day with my cherished family and close friends.”
Sandberg also conveyed his eagerness to remain connected with the Cubs, expressing his hope to attend as many games as he can at Wrigley Field this season. He is also looking forward to the second half of the year.
His most recent appearance at Wrigley Field was on April 4, when he performed the ceremonial first pitch at the Cubs’ season opener.
After initially declaring himself cancer-free in August, Sandberg revealed that the disease had returned in December in a more aggressive form.
Despite this adversity, he remains resolute, pledging to ‘stay positive, remain strong, and fight to overcome this.’
Ryne Sandberg, a true Cubs legend, spent 15 of his 16 Major League Baseball seasons with the Chicago Cubs, establishing himself as a beloved figure in the franchise. He secured the National League MVP award in 1984, solidifying his status as one of baseball’s premier second basemen.
Recognized for his outstanding defense, Sandberg earned nine Gold Glove Awards and was a 10-time All-Star selection.
He concluded his career with 282 home runs, which was the highest among second basemen at the time of his retirement. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2005 as recognition of his significant achievements.
