Rublev Offers Support to Medvedev After US Open Meltdown

Following Daniil Medvedev’s turbulent US Open exit, Andrey Rublev has expressed his willingness to assist his long-time friend in managing his emotions. Medvedev’s disappointing Grand Slam year culminated in a contentious first-round loss.

Medvedev suffered a 6-3, 7-5, 6-7(5), 0-6, 6-4 defeat against Benjamin Bonzi. The match was marred by Medvedev’s outbursts directed at the chair umpire and his attempts to incite the crowd, disrupting Bonzi’s serve at match point.

The incident occurred when a photographer entered the court as Bonzi was serving for the match, causing him to miss his first serve. The umpire’s decision to grant Bonzi another first serve triggered Medvedev’s controversial response. Despite prolonging the match, the 2021 US Open champion couldn’t secure the win, ultimately destroying his racket and displaying visible disappointment after his earliest hardcourt Grand Slam exit in eight years.

“If he desires to evolve and requires assistance, I, along with numerous other friends and family members, am available to support him,” stated Rublev, who has known Medvedev since childhood. “Ultimately, it’s his life and his choice regarding the steps he needs to take.”

Rublev, familiar with emotional challenges on the court, is uniquely positioned to understand Medvedev’s struggles. He himself has shown frustration in past matches.

Amid suggestions from figures like Boris Becker that Medvedev seek professional guidance, Rublev emphasized that the decision rests with the player. “Only he truly understands his internal state,” Rublev commented. “I believe he requires some time to process this difficult defeat, but I intend to reach out to him. His Grand Slam performance this year has been challenging.”

Medvedev’s loss in New York signifies a year with limited success at major tournaments, with his sole victory occurring at the Australian Open in January.

Frances Tiafoe suggested that Medvedev’s frustration likely stems from his subpar season. “He maintains exceptionally high expectations for himself,” Tiafoe explained. “He’s been facing difficulties and grappling with early defeats against opponents he believes he should overcome.”

Tiafoe added, “Another aspect of him emerges. I aspire to witness him performing at his full potential. This period has been exceptionally challenging for him.”
