Rooney Voices Concerns Over Manchester United’s Direction Under Amorim

Manchester United icon Wayne Rooney has openly criticized Ruben Amorim, expressing a lack of confidence in both the club’s direction and its manager. Rooney emphasized the need for significant change at Old Trafford and urged the ownership to establish a clear vision for the future.

Since taking over last November, head coach Amorim has only managed to secure 34 points from 33 Premier League matches. This follows Saturday’s 3-1 defeat against Brentford.

Rooney, United’s all-time leading scorer, mentioned that he frequently anticipates losses when attending games. Furthermore, he suggested that several players no longer deserve the honor of representing the club.

During a recent podcast appearance, the 39-year-old also voiced his disappointment with the limited progress achieved under Amorim’s leadership.

“I’m unsure about the current situation. I ventured into management myself, with limited success, so I understand the challenges,” he stated.

“Ruben Amorim is the same age as me; he’s a young manager with, I’m sure, a bright future. However, the current state of affairs at Man Utd is simply not representative of the club.”

“I sincerely hope he can turn things around. But, based on what I’ve witnessed, I genuinely lack faith in that outcome.”

Amorim’s appointment followed Erik Ten Hag’s departure last November, after Amorim’s successful tenure with Sporting CP, where he secured two titles.

Last season marked United’s worst Premier League performance, as they finished 15th, their lowest ever, and lost the Europa League final to Tottenham. Currently, they are in 14th place after six games this season, having lost half of those matches.

Rooney further commented that the club’s identity has been eroded.

“I no longer recognise the football club that won five Premier League titles and the Champions League,” Rooney remarked.

“The club has lost its soul. It requires a new driving force, a revitalization. The football club needs something to reignite its spirit.”

Despite the team’s struggles, including a Carabao Cup exit to League Two side Grimsby last month, Amorim reportedly retains the backing of the United hierarchy.

However, Rooney hinted that Gareth Southgate is among the potential replacements being considered, in addition to Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner and Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola.
