Rooney Responds to Owen’s Comparison
Wayne Rooney has responded to Michael Owen’s comparative remarks, stating that they were fundamentally different players, according to recent reports.
Owen’s comments, where he contrasted himself with his former England teammate, ignited a debate on social media platforms, which continues to simmer following Rooney’s reaction.
Rooney offered a diplomatic response, emphasizing the differences in their playing styles.
“Michael and I are very different players,” Rooney clarified.
“I remember pretending to be Michael Owen while playing in the streets, even though he was a Liverpool player.”
The discussion originated from Owen’s assessment regarding a comparison with Rooney.
“I noticed Wazza was asked to pick the better player between us at 17 or 18. It made me smile,” Owen mentioned.
“Wayne Rooney is the only person in our country to whom I can be compared.”
Rooney, younger than Owen by six years, acknowledged the fairness of his former teammate’s viewpoint, recognizing that both would naturally advocate for themselves.
He expressed that he would never personally evaluate himself against Owen.
“I believe his statements are reasonable. He is naturally going to support himself, as would I,” Rooney added.
“However, I would never compare myself to Michael Owen because I admired him and had the privilege of playing alongside him for England and Manchester United.”
Wayne Rooney holds the distinction of being England’s second-highest goal scorer historically, while Michael Owen ranks sixth.
Owen, whose career was significantly impacted by injuries, recorded 222 goals across 482 club appearances before his retirement at age 32.
Rooney enjoyed a more extended and fruitful career, amassing 313 club goals in 763 matches.
