Laurent Mekies to Succeed Christian Horner at Red Bull
After two decades with Red Bull, Christian Horner has been relieved of his duties as team principal, the Formula One team officially announced on Wednesday. Horner had held the position since 2005. His successor will be Laurent Mekies.
Mekies, a Frenchman, comes to the team from Racing Bulls. Alan Permane, currently serving as Racing Director, will be promoted to team principal at Racing Bulls.
Red Bull communicated the leadership change through a formal statement.
“Effective today, Wednesday, July 9, 2025, Christian Horner has been released from his operational responsibilities, and Laurent Mekies has been appointed as CEO of Red Bull Racing,” the statement read.
During Horner’s tenure, Red Bull secured eight Drivers’ World Championships and six Constructors’ Championships. However, the team is currently fourth in the constructors’ standings with 172 points, trailing leaders McLaren by 288 points.
Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, a four-time world champion, has claimed victory in two of the twelve races this season and currently holds third place in the drivers’ championship.
Upon his appointment, Mekies expressed his gratitude, stating it was an honor to contribute to Racing Bulls, and he commended Alan, who will take over his previous role.
“Contributing to the establishment of Racing Bulls alongside our talented team has been an incredible journey. The team’s spirit is exceptional, and I am confident that this is only the beginning,” Mekies stated.
“Alan is ideally suited to assume leadership and continue our progress. He possesses an intimate understanding of the team and has consistently been a crucial component of our early achievements.”
