Punjab Weather Calamity: Dozens of Casualties Reported

Lahore: Recent adverse weather conditions in Punjab have resulted in significant casualties. Between June 25th and 28th, approximately 12 individuals, including five children and three women, have tragically died, while 39 others sustained various injuries due to rain-related incidents.

Data provided by the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) indicates that these unfortunate incidents occurred across 13 districts, as the region experienced heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and strong gusts of wind.

The majority of fatalities were a consequence of collapsing roofs and walls, caused by the intense downpours. In separate incidents, two men were reported to have drowned in a rainwater channel, and another person died as a result of electrocution. Lightning strikes were responsible for two additional deaths, one in Okara and another in Khanewal.

District-wise Breakdown of Incidents
  • Okara: Reported the highest number of cases with eight incidents leading to one child’s death, and injuries to two children, two women, and three men.
  • Mandi Bahauddin: Experienced two deaths, a woman and a child, along with three injuries.
  • Bahawalnagar and Faisalabad: Each district reported the death of one child.
  • Kasur: Witnessed the deaths of two children and one injury.
  • Wazirabad: Recorded one man and one child’s death and two injuries.
  • Jhelum: Two men drowned in a flooded canal.
  • Chiniot: Reported four male injuries due to a collapsed roof.
  • Khanewal: One man died, and another was injured due to a lightning strike.
  • Sahiwal: Recorded injuries to one man and one woman.
  • Multan: Four incidents resulted in injuries to eight people, including women and children.
  • Sheikhupura, Nankana Sahib, and Rahim Yar Khan: These areas reported injuries and livestock losses. Specifically, in Rahim Yar Khan, a cow died and another was injured when a tree was uprooted by strong winds.

The PDMA has confirmed a total of 28 incidents during this period of severe weather. They are urging the populace to exercise vigilance and avoid fragile structures during these hazardous conditions.
