A significant weather system is poised to bring widespread rain and thundershowers to various parts of Pakistan, including Karachi and other regions in Sindh, during the Eid ul Fitr holiday period. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) anticipates these weather changes from March 17 to March 20.
The forecast indicates that a westerly wave, a common seasonal weather pattern, will enter Pakistan’s western areas on the evening of March 17. It is expected to spread across most of the country by March 18 and begin to subside by March 20, promising a few days of active but potentially unsettled weather.
Balochistan is likely to be the first to experience the shift, with rain, breezy conditions, and isolated thunderstorms, possibly including hail, expected in cities like Quetta, Ziarat, Chaman, and Gwadar from March 17 through March 20.
Sindh, including Karachi and Hyderabad, is forecast to see cloudy weather with rain and occasional thunder on March 18 and 19. Other districts in Sindh such as Larkana, Sukkur, and Mirpurkhas will also be affected.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa anticipates rain, wind, and thundershowers, with snowfall expected over higher elevations in areas like Chitral, Swat, Peshawar, and Abbottabad. Isolated hail is also possible.
Punjab and Islamabad are set to experience rainy and breezy conditions with isolated hail from the night of March 17 to the morning of March 20. Cities including Rawalpindi, Lahore, Faisalabad, and Gujranwala are included in this forecast. Southern Punjab districts like Multan and Bahawalpur can expect similar weather on March 18 and 19.
Gilgit Baltistan and Azad Kashmir will also see rain, clouds, and thundershowers, along with snowfall in mountainous regions like Hunza, Skardu, and Muzaffarabad. Heavier spells are possible, especially over Kashmir.
The PMD has issued advisories for specific groups. Residents in hilly areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Kashmir should be aware of potential landslides. Caution is advised during thundery spells due to the risk of lightning. Farmers are encouraged to protect their crops from potential hail damage. Daytime temperatures are expected to be cooler than usual.
Travelers planning journeys for Eid are advised to check weather updates and road conditions, and to postpone travel during periods of heavy rain. Government departments have been alerted to ensure public safety.
