Raducanu Advances, Set to Clash with Valentova or Rybakina
Emma Raducanu delivered a dominant display at the US Open on Wednesday. The 2021 champion cruised into the third round after defeating Indonesian qualifier Janice Tjen 6-2, 6-1.
The 22-year-old, fresh from securing her first tournament victory since her title win, encountered a determined opponent in Tjen. Tjen was buoyed by a stunning upset of 24th seed Veronika Kudermetova.
However, Raducanu’s precise serves and unrelenting tempo proved insurmountable. She secured the win in just one hour, marking her fastest Grand Slam victory to date.
“I am extremely happy with my performance today. Janice is a very formidable player, and I felt she capitalized on any ball that wasn’t up to par,” Raducanu commented.
“Janice is demonstrating some truly dangerous tennis, having defeated a top seed in the opening round.
“I am confident she will gain significant momentum from this. I anticipate our next match.”
Raducanu exhibited focus from the start, securing a break in Tjen’s initial service game and then holding serve after overcoming three break points to establish a 3-0 advantage.
The British player prevented Tjen from settling into a rhythm. Raducanu sealed the first set with consistent serving and commanding groundstrokes.
Maintaining her intensity, she achieved two breaks in the second set to establish a commanding lead. She then served out the match, concluding an exceptional showing that included 16 winners, eight aces, and no double faults.
In the subsequent round, she is scheduled to compete against either Czech teenager Tereza Valentova or 2022 Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina.
