Punjab Health Minister Khawaja Salman Rafique has directed the Punjab Human Organ Transplantation Authority (PHOTA) to launch an intensified crackdown on illegal organ transplants across the province, especially targeting kidney trafficking networks.
During the 34th meeting of PHOTA’s Monitoring Authority, the minister reaffirmed the government’s unwavering commitment to eradicating the illicit organ trade. He announced the expansion of PHOTA’s operational capacity and the establishment of new offices in Sialkot and Bahawalpur to enhance regional oversight and enforcement capabilities.
The action follows a wave of arrests across Punjab, where suspected organ traffickers, including medical staff, agents, and doctors, have been detained in ongoing operations linked to the illegal transplantation of kidneys and other human organs. PHOTA and the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) have jointly apprehended numerous suspects in recent months.
Authorities have also confirmed that offenders involved in organ trafficking can face up to 10 years in prison and fines of Rs 10 million under existing legislation. Additional amendments are under consideration to further strengthen punitive measures.
Minister Rafique emphasized the urgency of safeguarding vulnerable communities and creating a transparent organ donation system. PHOTA is now tasked with maintaining a comprehensive donor registry and raising public awareness to curb unregulated transplant practices.
