Karachi Braces for Potential Rain and Thunderstorms

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a weather advisory, anticipating light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds in Karachi. The forecast suggests a high likelihood of scattered showers across the city within the next 24 hours.

The temperature is expected to fluctuate between 35 and 37 degrees Celsius. Humidity is currently at 65%, with gentle breezes coming from the southeast.

The PMD has also noted that a low-pressure weather system over Gujarat, India, might evolve into a tropical cyclone upon entering the northeast Arabian Sea around October 1. This development raises the possibility of powerful winds, significant rainfall, and potential disruption in Sindh province.

The Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre in Karachi indicates that the low-pressure area is projected to track west-northwest and could intensify into a depression as it reaches the Arabian Sea near Saurashtra. Authorities have stated that while there is no immediate threat to Pakistan’s coastal regions, they are closely monitoring the system’s progression.

The National Weather Forecasting Centre in Islamabad reported that moisture-laden currents from the Arabian Sea are moving into southeastern Sindh. This is expected to bring widespread rain, thunderstorms, and strong gusts to Karachi, Hyderabad, Thatta, Badin, Sujawal, Tharparkar, Umerkot, Mirpurkhas, Sanghar, Khairpur, Matiari, Tando Allahyar, Tando Muhammad Khan, and Jamshoro from the night of September 29 until October 2.

Tharparkar, Umerkot, and Mirpurkhas may experience localized heavy downpours during this period.

Earlier in September, Karachi experienced substantial rainfall from September 8-10, resulting in widespread flooding and displacement of numerous residents. The city also saw light rainfall and drizzle on September 16.
