PHF Seeks Deadline Extension from FIH Until August 20, States President Bugti

LAHORE: Tariq Bugti, the president of the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF), announced on Monday that the federation has formally requested the International Hockey Federation (FIH) to prolong the deadline for confirming the national team’s participation in the Pro League.

Following New Zealand’s withdrawal from the tournament despite their victory in the Nations Cup, the primary hockey organization officially invited the Pakistan men’s team to join the Pro League last month.

The PHF was initially required to notify the apex federation of its decision to accept or reject the invitation by August 12.

According to recent developments, PHF President Bugti revealed that they have requested an extension while negotiations with the government are in progress.

Bugti informed reporters, “Discussions with the government about the Pro League are still underway, and positive news should be available soon.”

He further stated, “The FIH had set a deadline of August 12 for notification, but we have asked for the deadline to be extended to August 20.”

The PHF President also expressed the opinion that participation in the Pro League would provide the national team considerable exposure. He also disclosed that the federation has submitted a budget of PKR 350 million to the government for approval.

Bugti stated, “Participation in the Pro Hockey League will give players valuable exposure and raise the team’s position.”

He added, “A budget of PKR 350 million has been created and submitted for the Pro Hockey League, while PKR 700 million will be needed for other events throughout the year, including the Pro Hockey League.”

Tariq Bugti also spoke about the national team’s participation in the next Asia Cup in India, stating that it is contingent on receiving government permission.

Bugti declared, “The government must determine whether or not to send the team to India for the Asia Cup.”

He concluded, “We will respect any decision made by the Pakistani government.”

He did, however, emphasize the security concerns for the national team in India and so wants to examine the arrangements across the border before making a judgment.
