Magic Secure Core Players with Long-Term Extensions

The Orlando Magic have officially announced the signing of forward Paolo Banchero to a long-term extension. This move ensures that Banchero, along with Franz Wagner and Jalen Suggs, will remain under contract for the next five years, solidifying the team’s young core.

In addition to securing their existing talent, the Magic recently acquired sharpshooter Desmond Bane, who is contracted through the 2028–29 season. They also bolstered their backcourt with the addition of veteran point guard Tyus Jones.

Jeff Weltman, the Magic’s President of Basketball Operations, voiced his confidence in Banchero’s growth and dedication to the franchise.

Weltman’s Statement

“This commitment showcases our belief in Paolo’s skill set, personal qualities, and his ambition to achieve victory at the highest level,” Weltman stated. “It also demonstrates Paolo’s faith in our organization, our supporters, and the city of Orlando. We eagerly anticipate continuing this journey together.”

Banchero’s Performance

Banchero, the first overall pick in the 2022 NBA draft, was sidelined for 34 games early in the 2024–25 season due to an oblique injury.

Despite this setback, the 22-year-old demonstrated remarkable resilience, achieving career-best averages of 25.9 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 4.8 assists per game.

His performance following the All-Star break was particularly noteworthy, as he averaged 29.0 points per game. He also established a franchise record with seven consecutive 25-point playoff performances, elevating his performance when it mattered most.

Throughout his initial three NBA seasons, Banchero has accumulated a total of 4,432 points, ranking third in Magic history for a player’s first three years, only surpassed by Shaquille O’Neal and Penny Hardaway.

The 2022–23 NBA Rookie of the Year and a 2024 All-Star, Banchero holds career averages of 22.4 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 4.6 assists.
