Pakistani Exporters Seek Policy Stability After US Tariff Reduction
Following the United States’ decision to lower reciprocal tariffs from 29% to 19%, Pakistani exporters are urging the government to ensure stable policy support, cost-effective production, and streamlined access to raw materials. This is aimed at maximizing the nation’s export capabilities within the American market.
The appeal was made during a meeting concerning US Reciprocal Tariffs. Federal Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal Khan presided over the meeting, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Commerce on Tuesday.
The meeting saw the attendance of key figures such as Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Industries and Production Haroon Akhtar Khan, Coordinator to the Prime Minister on Commerce Rana Ihsaan Afzal, and Secretary Commerce Jawad Paul. Furthermore, over 30 prominent exporters and SMEs from various sectors, including apparel and textiles, rice, salt, surgical instruments, sporting goods, electronics, food and agriculture, and leather, were present.
During the discussions, industrialists lauded the government for securing what they described as “one of Pakistan’s most strategic trade victories in recent years compared to its regional counterparts.”
However, industry representatives emphasized the need for the government to offer consistent and predictable policy assistance. Their aim is to optimize manufacturing costs and ensure access to essential inputs, thereby capitalizing on future business prospects.
The Commerce Minister affirmed the government’s commitment to policies that promote exports, including both immediate support measures and sustainable long-term strategies.
He asserted that through stronger cooperation and decisive actions, Pakistan’s export industries could achieve considerable expansion.
He also mentioned that all recommendations put forth by the exporters would be presented to the Prime Minister for review.
Kamal stated during the meeting that exporter feedback on the prospects arising from the tariff reduction necessitates the creation of a strategy to leverage this opportunity and boost exports.
Meanwhile, SAPM Haroon Akhtar highlighted Pakistan’s advantageous position in the region and affirmed the government’s dedication to providing maximum support to the industry to unlock business opportunities resulting from the current situation.
