Government Aims for 2.2 Million Electric Vehicles by 2030

The government has outlined plans to increase the number of Electric Vehicles (EVs) on roads to 2.2 million by 2030. This initiative intends to tackle climate change issues, specifically smog in Punjab, decrease petroleum product imports by a minimum of $1 billion annually, and enhance public health.

This statement was made by Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on Industries and Production, Haroon Akhtar Khan, during a meeting with used car importers on Tuesday.

Khan noted that the forthcoming Auto Policy 2026 will streamline the import of both used and electric vehicles. The policy is designed to stimulate competition within Pakistan’s automotive market by facilitating greater access to foreign automobiles.

Key Discussion Points

The meeting addressed critical areas such as the upcoming Auto Policy 2026, challenges related to import and export, and supplementary customs duties.

Stakeholder Recognition and Policy Vision

SAPM Khan acknowledged the Car Dealers Importers Association as a crucial stakeholder in the policy formulation’s consultation process. He restated the government’s commitment to encouraging a more open and competitive import system for vehicles in Pakistan.

Khan asserted that increased competition in car imports would pressure domestic manufacturers to innovate and expand into export markets. To maintain the quality of used car imports, the government will enforce mandatory registration and certification procedures.

Shift Towards Sustainable Transportation

Khan emphasized Pakistan’s transition from petrol-based vehicles to more environmentally friendly options. Aligning with government directives, the Ministry of Industries has introduced a comprehensive National Electric Vehicle (NEV) Policy for 2025–2030.

He further explained that this policy seeks to convert 2.2 million vehicles to electric power by 2030. Promoting electric vehicles is essential for reducing smog and improving overall public health.

The SAPM stated that the adoption of EVs would be both economically advantageous and environmentally beneficial, leading to improved health outcomes for the Pakistani population.

The Car Dealers Importers Association pledged to submit detailed proposals to support the policy development process. SAPM Khan assured the association that the government would carefully consider their suggestions and provide complete support.
