Heatwave Expected to Persist in Pakistan

The meteorological department has indicated that the ongoing heatwave is expected to continue until Sunday. Lahore, the capital of Punjab, recorded a temperature exceeding 42 degrees Celsius today, marking the highest temperature of the summer season.

A high-pressure weather system is anticipated to dominate most regions of the country for the next two to three days.

This weather pattern is likely to cause daytime temperatures to remain four to six degrees Celsius above the normal average in Pakistan’s southern regions, specifically Sindh, southern Punjab, and Balochistan, until May 20.

Similarly, the upper half of the country, including central and upper Punjab, Islamabad, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan, will likely experience daytime temperatures five to seven degrees Celsius above normal until May 19.

A westerly weather system is forecasted to enter the upper parts of the country on the evening or night of May 19. Heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms is expected in Kashmir, Islamabad and the Potohar region, northeast Punjab, upper Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan on May 19 and 20.

Due to the prevailing heatwave conditions, the public, particularly children, women, and senior citizens, are advised to take necessary precautions.

  • Avoid direct exposure to sunlight during the day.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids.

Farmers are also advised to manage their agricultural activities and ensure the well-being of their livestock by considering the prevailing weather conditions.
