Pakistan Voices Concern Over Torture in Occupied Territories

Pakistan has voiced profound apprehension regarding the persistent utilization of torture as a method of subjugation within regions under foreign occupation, specifically highlighting the Occupied Palestinian Territory and Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).

In a declaration commemorating the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, the Foreign Office articulated that the inhabitants of Palestine and IIOJK are exposed to the most severe manifestations of torture, alongside inhumane treatment or degrading punishment, perpetrated by occupying forces aiming to quell their entitlement to self-determination.

Pakistan has restated its dedication to the eradication of torture and the safeguarding of human dignity. It emphasized that Islam champions the inviolability and esteem of each human being, deeming torture incompatible with the tenets of justice, compassion, and mercy.

Guided by its core principles and global commitments, Pakistan stated its ongoing efforts to bolster legal reforms, reinforce institutional protections, and enhance oversight frameworks to guarantee accountability and uphold the rule of law.

The nation is also implementing initiatives to extend medical, judicial, and psychosocial aid to victims.

Pakistan has appealed to the international community to denounce the transgressions perpetrated by occupying powers and to undertake measures to alleviate the plight of those subjected to torture and oppression.

For several years, Palestinians have endured what they describe as genocide at the hands of Israel, and more recently, since the escalation of conflict in October 2023, the death toll in Gaza has exceeded 56,000, attributed to Israeli occupation forces.

The UN International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, observed annually on June 26, commemorates the enactment of the UN Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment in 1987. Currently, 174 states are signatories to the Convention.
