Ferry Service to Iran and Gulf Nations Gets Approval
The Ministry of Maritime Affairs officially approved ferry service permits on Monday for routes to Iran and Gulf countries, aiming to provide passengers with affordable sea travel options.
Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry stated that the ferry service would commence from Karachi and Gwadar, ensuring secure, comfortable, and cost-effective sea transportation.
“A new era of maritime connectivity begins today,” he commented, highlighting the service’s potential to offer economical travel for pilgrims and laborers.
The minister noted that this initiative is expected to bolster the nation’s blue economy, enhance tourism, and stimulate trade.
Notably, last month the ministry confirmed that five private-sector operators had submitted formal proposals to run a ferry service connecting Gwadar Port with Gulf countries.
The maritime minister had previously led a high-level meeting to assess submissions from private bidders, which detailed their technical, operational, and financial strategies for the ferry route.
The proposed ferry routes are designed to present a budget-friendly and efficient option for passenger travel and cargo transportation.
During the meeting, the minister underscored the initiative’s strategic importance, pointing out that the service would not only lower transportation expenses but also foster enhanced regional trade integration and maritime activities.
He emphasized that the project’s successful execution could significantly improve Pakistan’s maritime presence and transform Gwadar into a key hub within international sea trade networks.
“The ferry service will facilitate easier travel between Pakistan and Gulf countries,” he added, noting that it “can establish Gwadar as a crucial link in regional connectivity and promote sustained economic growth.”
In a related development, the minister spoke with Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti via telephone to discuss cooperation at the provincial level. According to the ministry, Bugti “pledged complete support for the ferry service project”.
