Padres Secure Series Victory Over Diamondbacks
SAN DIEGO: At Petco Park on Thursday, Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado each contributed a home run, propelling the San Diego Padres to a 4-3 victory over the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks and clinching the series.
After Padres’ starting pitcher Randy Vasquez left the game in the fifth inning, Adrian Morejon, a left-handed pitcher, delivered one and two-thirds innings of scoreless relief, securing his second win in the series.
The Padres’ bullpen managed to hold the narrow lead, pitching a combined four and two-thirds innings and conceding only one run. Robert Suarez, the closer, finalized the game in the ninth, achieving his 27th save, which leads MLB.
Vasquez pitched for just over four innings, allowing five hits and two runs, with four walks and one strikeout.
Eduardo Rodriguez, the Diamondbacks’ starter, pitched for a little over four innings, allowing eight hits and four runs, with two walks and three strikeouts.
Arizona took the lead in the third inning, making the score 2-0. Jake McCarthy walked to start the inning and advanced to third on Alec Thomas’s double. Jose Herrera and Corbin Carroll then drove them in with consecutive sacrifice flies.
San Diego answered with three runs in the bottom half of the third. Tatis Jr.’s solo home run initiated the comeback, and Machado’s 16th home run in the fifth gave the Padres a 3-2 advantage.
Following with a single, Gavin Sheets forced Rodriguez’s exit, and Xander Bogaerts’s double off reliever Juan Morillo brought Sheets home.
The Diamondbacks posed a threat in the seventh, narrowing the gap to 4-3 with Geraldo Perdomo’s RBI double.
However, Jason Adam prevented any further damage by getting Lourdes Gurriel Jr. to ground out, leaving two runners stranded. Arizona was unable to capitalize in the eighth.
Looking ahead, Ryne Nelson will pitch for the Diamondbacks against Tyler Anderson of the Angels on Friday in Los Angeles. Ryan Bergert of the Padres is scheduled to face Ranger Suárez of Philadelphia at home.
