Gaupset Shines as Norway Prepares for Quarter-Finals

Signe Gaupset’s impressive performance, featuring two goals and two assists in Norway’s final group stage match against Iceland, has given head coach Gemma Grainger a selection headache before their Women’s Euros quarter-final against Italy in Geneva on Wednesday.

The 20-year-old Gaupset, stepping in for Guro Reiten on the left wing with the group already secured, made the most of her chance. She not only scored twice but also set up Frida Maanum for two additional goals, sparking calls from supporters for her inclusion in the starting lineup.

“Signe’s showing against Iceland wasn’t a surprise to us. We observe her dedication in training daily, and that’s the level she consistently displays,” Grainger commented, while remaining coy about her team selection.

“Across the squad, the level of competition is intense, which is exactly what I desire as a coach and what I want the team to embrace.”

The Norwegian team has been in good spirits at their training camp by Lake Neuchatel, where players have been seen enjoying themselves and signing autographs for supporters.

Captain Ada Hegerberg emphasized the significant opportunity her team has to reach the tournament’s semi-finals, stating, “This is a massive moment for us. The team’s energy has been fantastic, with everyone contributing.”

Hegerberg, who was part of the Norway team that lost to Germany in the 2013 final, added, “We’re aiming for a strong performance tomorrow and want to seize the chance to be among the top four teams in Europe; it would be amazing.”
