Angels Edge Out Yankees in Tight MLB Matchup
NEW YORK: In a closely contested Major League Baseball (MLB) game at Yankee Stadium on Monday, the Los Angeles Angels prevailed over the New York Yankees with a score of 1-0, thanks to Nolan Schanuel’s crucial double in the 11th inning.
Schanuel’s timely hit off Jonathan Loáisiga (0-1) allowed Christian Moore, the automatic runner, to secure the winning run.
The Yankees had an opportunity to equalize or take the lead in the bottom of the 11th with the bases loaded. However, Hunter Strickland managed to retire Anthony Volpe, concluding the game. Earlier, after an intentional walk to Aaron Judge for the second instance, Cody Bellinger’s flyball advanced Paul Goldschmidt, the automatic runner, to third.
Goldschmidt attempted to score but was tagged out at home by Moore. Jazz Chisholm Jr. prolonged the inning with an infield hit.
Ryan Zeferjahn (4-1) delivered a scoreless 10th inning following Kenley Jansen’s scoreless ninth.
This loss marked the Yankees’ fourth consecutive defeat, a season-high, with a batting performance of 1-for-18 with runners in scoring position.
Giancarlo Stanton made his season debut for New York, going 2-for-4 after recovering from elbow inflammation that sidelined him for the initial 70 games.
José Soriano pitched seven innings for the Angels, conceding seven hits and one walk while recording six strikeouts.
Clarke Schmidt, the Yankees’ starter, pitched seven and two-thirds innings, allowing four hits and striking out three.
Schmidt initially allowed singles to Zach Neto and Trout. Subsequently, he retired 16 consecutive batters before Schanuel singled, a play where Cody Bellinger couldn’t make a sliding catch in left field.
Before Moore’s triple to right field, marking his first career hit, Schmidt retired seven batters in a row.
Yankees’ Will Warren is scheduled to pitch against the Angels’ Kyle Hendricks on Tuesday night.
