New Zealand Clinches Victory Over Zimbabwe by Nine Wickets
BULAWAYO: With Matt Henry showcasing exceptional form, bagging match figures of 9/90, New Zealand secured a decisive nine-wicket victory against Zimbabwe in the opening Test of their two-match series. The match took place at the Queens Sports Club on Friday.
Zimbabwe, resuming their second innings on day three at 31/2 with Nick Welch and Vincent Masekesa at the crease, managed to add only 134 runs. They lost their remaining eight wickets and were eventually bowled out for a total of 165 in their second innings.
Sean Williams, the seasoned all-rounder, emerged as Zimbabwe’s highest scorer in the second innings, demonstrating resilience with a 49 off 66 balls, including six boundaries. Williams also forged a significant 57-run partnership for the fifth wicket alongside skipper Craig Ervine, who contributed 22 runs from 53 deliveries.
Following their successive dismissals, wicketkeeper Tafadzwa Tsiga took charge of Zimbabwe’s batting, carefully accumulating 27 runs. He received brief support from Blessing Muzarabani (19), with the pair adding a crucial 36 runs for the ninth wicket, averting an innings defeat.
Tsiga’s dismissal marked the end of Zimbabwe’s innings. He was caught by Devon Conway off a delivery from New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner.
Santner spearheaded New Zealand’s bowling attack, claiming four wickets. Henry, the standout performer from the first innings, and Will O’Rourke each secured three wickets.
New Zealand chased down a modest target of eight runs, losing only one wicket in the process and finishing the game with 14 balls to spare.
Conway and Henry Nicholls each scored four runs for New Zealand.
