Former Senator Mushtaq Ahmad Returns to Pakistan After Detention
Former senator Mushtaq Ahmad, who was apprehended by Israeli forces during an interception of a Gaza aid flotilla last week, has commenced his journey back to Pakistan from Jordan.
Pakistan’s Embassy in Jordan announced on X, stating, “By the grace of Allah, Senator Mushtaq Ahmad has safely departed for Pakistan.”
The embassy further noted, “Following the directives of Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister, the Embassy of Pakistan in Amman ensured that all essential arrangements were in place to facilitate his secure and seamless departure.”
The former senator was freed from Israeli custody on Tuesday and subsequently deported to the Pakistani embassy located in Amman, Jordan. Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar verified his release.
Dar posted on X, saying, “I am happy to confirm that former senator Mushtaq has been freed and is now safe at the Pakistan Embassy in Amman. He is healthy and in good spirits. The Embassy is prepared to assist his return to Pakistan, in accordance with his preferences and convenience.”
In a video message issued post-release, Ahmad mentioned he was held at Ketziot Prison, also known as Ansar III, a highly secured facility situated in Israel’s Negev desert.
“I was subjected to mistreatment. My vision was obscured, and weapons were aimed at us,” he recounted. “I started a hunger strike, and Israeli forces restricted access to fresh air, potable water, and necessary medications,” the former senator added, detailing his experience.
Ahmad was among several individuals detained earlier in the month after Israeli forces stopped the Global Sumud Flotilla, which was delivering humanitarian supplies to Gaza.
The flotilla, comprising 45 ships with activists and political figures, had set sail from Spain the previous month with intentions to break Israel’s blockade of Gaza, where the United Nations has cautioned about an impending famine.
