Monterrey Secures Quarterfinal Spot Against Borussia Dortmund
LOS ANGELES: In a commanding performance at the Rose Bowl on Wednesday, the Mexican team Monterrey earned their place in the FIFA Club World Cup knockout stage, defeating Japan’s Urawa Red Diamonds by a score of 4-0.
Monterrey asserted their dominance early, scoring three goals in a swift eight-minute span during the first half, leaving their Japanese opponents stunned.
The scoring was initiated in the 30th minute by Nelson Deossa, who delivered a remarkable left-footed shot from 35 yards, leaving Urawa’s goalkeeper, Shusaku Nishikawa, unable to react.
Continuing their offensive, Monterrey extended their lead just four minutes later when Alfonso Alvarado delivered a precise pass to German Berterame.
The Argentine forward capitalized, slotting the ball into the corner of the net, further increasing Monterrey’s advantage.
These rapid goals shifted the game’s dynamic entirely in Monterrey’s favor, giving them substantial control.
Jesus Corona increased the lead to 3-0 in the 38th minute with a powerful shot from 30 yards out.
Urawa’s Yusuke Matsuo had an opportunity in the 25th minute after a pass from Ryoma Watanabe, but Ricardo Chavez blocked the shot.
Having already faced elimination after two prior losses, Urawa was unable to pose a significant response. Monterrey maintained control throughout the second half, with Nishikawa making multiple saves.
Although Berterame missed a chance in the 52nd minute, he scored in stoppage time, securing his second goal and solidifying the definitive victory.
Following this result and Inter Milan’s 2-0 victory over River Plate, Monterrey concluded Group E in second place. They are now scheduled to play Borussia Dortmund in the quarterfinals in Atlanta on Tuesday.
