Milner Extends Brighton Contract, Chasing Premier League Record
Veteran English midfielder James Milner has agreed to a one-year contract extension with Brighton & Hove Albion F.C. The announcement, made by the club on Friday, signals Milner’s ambition to break the all-time record for Premier League appearances.
Milner’s Premier League journey began in 2002 when he debuted for Leeds United at the age of 16.
An injury in August limited him to only four league appearances during the 2024-25 season.
Currently, Milner has played in 638 Premier League matches, placing him just behind Gareth Barry, who holds the record with 653 appearances.
Coach’s Statement
Head coach Fabian Huerzeler expressed his delight, stating that he is pleased to have Milner on the team for another season.
“I’m really pleased we will have James with us again this season,” Huerzeler remarked.
Reflecting on the previous season, Huerzeler acknowledged Milner’s limited on-field contributions due to injury but emphasized the midfielder’s invaluable experience, especially for younger players.
“Last season he wasn’t able to help the team on the pitch as much as he would have liked, but around the squad his experience is invaluable, especially for the younger players.”
He also praised Milner’s character, adding that he anticipates working with him again.
“He’s a great guy to have in our environment, who is always there for me and the team. I’m looking forward to working with him again.”
Brighton concluded the previous season in eighth place in the Premier League, missing out on European qualification.
