Topuria’s Manager Hints at Title Defense Opponent
Hints regarding Ilia Topuria’s initial lightweight title defense have been dropped by his manager, according to recent reports.
Following his impressive knockout victory over Charles Oliveira in June, Topuria has risen to prominence in mixed martial arts.
Boasting an unblemished professional record of 17-0, Topuria transitioned from featherweight after securing victories against formidable opponents like Josh Emmett and Bryce Mitchell.
The triumph against Oliveira also places Topuria among the select few who have clinched UFC titles in multiple weight classes.
While Ilia Topuria had a face-off with Paddy Pimblett post-fight, both fans and Topuria himself are eager for a match against Islam Makhachev, considered a major event in the MMA landscape.
UFC icon Chael Sonnen suggests a Topuria versus Pimblett showdown could potentially outshine Islam versus Ilia in terms of popularity.
Sonnen commented that the magnitude of Islam versus Ilia is somewhat exaggerated, suggesting it requires further build-up to reach its full potential.
Arman Tsarukyan is also in contention for a title opportunity against Topuria.
Earlier in the week, Renato Moicano, a lightweight contender, indicated that Topuria is slated to compete at UFC 322 on November 15.
Now, Topuria’s manager has further fueled speculation by hinting via social media at a potential bout between Topuria and Justin Gaethje at UFC 322.
Topuria’s manager posted online, stating, “Say goodnight Gaethje… #AndStill #UFC322.”
UFC 322 is scheduled to take place at Madison Square Garden. There are unconfirmed reports suggesting a match between Islam Makhachev and Jack Della Maddalena may also feature on the card.
Gaethje, a former interim champion, previously stated he would retire if he wasn’t granted the next shot at the lightweight title.
