Chief Meteorologist Dismisses Earthquake Prediction Claims

Chief Meteorologist Amir Haider Laghari stated on Wednesday that there is currently no existing technology capable of accurately predicting earthquakes. This announcement aims to dispel circulating rumors regarding potential high-intensity tremors in the near future.

In his statement, Laghari noted, “Historically, Karachi has been susceptible to earthquakes registering magnitudes of 5.5 and 5.8.”

He further explained that the recent minor seismic events are a result of activity along the Landhi fault line as it undergoes a period of adjustment.

Laghari added that countless earthquakes of similar magnitude occur worldwide on a daily basis.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) chief emphasized that even in technologically advanced nations like Japan, ordinary individuals cannot reliably forecast seismic occurrences.

Karachi experienced an additional three earthquakes last night, with intensities ranging from 2 to 3.1 magnitude, marking the fourth consecutive day of such tremors.

The PMD’s Seismic Monitoring Centre reported that these recent events bring the total number of tremors felt in Karachi to 26 since June 1.

Since Sunday, several slight tremors have been felt in Karachi’s Landhi, Quaidabad, Malir, and neighboring areas, triggering anxiety among local inhabitants. Thus far, no significant destruction or injuries have been documented.
