Messi Reflects on Future After Argentina’s Victory
Following Argentina’s 3-0 triumph over Venezuela at the Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires on Thursday, Lionel Messi discussed his potential involvement in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. In his last home qualifier, Messi scored twice, contributing to the victory witnessed by 80,000 fans. Lautaro Martinez also added a goal as Messi marked his final official match in Argentina.
When questioned about the possibility of playing in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be held in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, Messi suggested that his age might be a limiting factor, though he remains motivated to participate.
“Considering my age, it seems unlikely that I will participate,” Messi stated.
Messi reflected on his recent home appearance, expressing his enjoyment of playing in Argentina.
“This field evokes numerous emotions and memories,” Messi remarked after the game. “Playing in Argentina with our fans is always a pleasure. We have enjoyed each match for many years. I am very happy that we concluded our points matches here in this manner, fulfilling a dream.
“I was honored, along with other players from the current and past teams. Everything we experienced was wonderful. Today marked our final match for points here.”
Messi reiterated that his participation in the upcoming World Cup is uncertain due to his age. However, he emphasized that his decision will depend on his physical condition and his desire to compete.
“As I’ve mentioned before regarding the World Cup, I don’t anticipate playing in another. Logically, my age suggests that I won’t be there,” the Inter Miami captain explained.
“However, we are close, and I am excited and motivated to play. As always, I will assess my condition daily and be honest with myself. When I feel well, I enjoy it, but if I don’t, I prefer not to participate. Therefore, we will see. I haven’t decided about the World Cup yet.
“I will finish the season, undergo preseason training, and then there will be six months remaining. We will evaluate how I feel. Hopefully, I’ll have a productive preseason in 2026 and conclude this MLS season successfully, and then I’ll make my decision.”
