Doncic Declares Championship Pursuit as Primary Goal
EL SEGUNDO: During the Los Angeles Lakers’ media day, LeBron James addressed speculation about his potential retirement. He is poised to break the record as the NBA’s longest-serving player, surpassing Vince Carter when the season commences.
James, at 40, is a Lakers’ icon entering his first season with the team under his current contract. He conveyed his enthusiasm for the upcoming challenge, mentioning the addition of new players to the roster. Regarding his contract, he stated that it would not impact his performance this season.
“It will have no impact,” James affirmed.
“I’m genuinely thrilled about the challenges and the excitement surrounding our team. We’ve brought in some fresh talent.”
In June, James opted into his $52.6 million player option, and according to his representative, Rich Paul, LeBron’s main objective remains contending for a championship. However, James emphasized his focus on consistent daily habits.
Last season, the Lakers were seeded third but were ousted in the first round by Minnesota. New teammate Luka Doncic emphasized the team’s ambition, stating that winning a championship is the ultimate aim.
“Winning a championship. That’s the goal,” Doncic stated.
James, currently recovering from a Grade 2 MCL sprain and ongoing foot problems, admitted that he is still working his way back to full fitness. As training camp gets underway, James may face some limitations, but he underscored the significance of his leadership, even from the sidelines.
When questioned about his retirement plans, James indicated that it hinges on his passion for the game.
“I think once I kind of fall out of love with the process, then I’ll know for sure. Then, it’d probably be the end for me,” LeBron remarked.
