KP Health Policy 2025: A New Era for Healthcare in the Province
The Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is in the final stages of shaping its Health Policy 2025, a landmark framework designed to address evolving healthcare challenges and strengthen service delivery across the province.
A consultative workshop was recently held at Khyber Medical University, bringing together experts, policymakers, and stakeholders to review the refined draft. This collaborative effort ensures that the policy reflects both local needs and international health commitments.
The previous Provincial Health Policy of 2018 laid the foundation for major reforms, including the launch of the Sehat Card initiative, autonomy for medical teaching institutions, and expanded public‑private partnerships under the KP Health Foundation. These reforms significantly improved healthcare access and accountability.
Over the past decade, the provincial health budget has surged from PKR 30 billion in 2016 to PKR 275 billion in 2025. This investment has boosted the Service Coverage Index (SCI) and reduced annual Disability‑Adjusted Life Years (DALYs) lost, reflecting measurable progress in healthcare outcomes.
However, new challenges demand a forward‑looking approach. Rising non‑communicable diseases, the need to sustain gains in maternal and child health, and the impact of climate change require innovative strategies. The policy also emphasizes Universal Health Coverage (UHC), climate resilience, and Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response (IDSR) in line with international health regulations.
The Health Sector Reform Unit (HSRU) has led the drafting process, conducting structured consultations, data analysis, and multiple refinements. The final draft now awaits technical review before official adoption.
A key objective of the new policy is to strengthen primary healthcare, ensuring that citizens can access essential services close to home. This approach aims to reduce the burden on tertiary hospitals and improve overall efficiency in the healthcare system.
By aligning with global health initiatives and national priorities, the KP Health Policy 2025 positions the province to deliver equitable, resilient, and sustainable healthcare for its population.
