Rashid Reflects on ‘Tough Call’ to Exclude Mujeeb

ABU DHABI: Following their impressive 94-run triumph over Hong Kong in the ACC Men’s T20 Asia Cup 2025 opener at the Zayed Cricket Stadium on Tuesday, Afghanistan’s captain, Rashid Khan, highlighted the need to address their early wicket losses.

After choosing to bat, Afghanistan posted a substantial 188/6, propelled by half-centuries from opener Sediqullah Atal and all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai.

However, their innings began poorly, falling to 26/2 within the first four overs.

During the post-match presentation, Skipper Rashid expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance, particularly praising Omarzai. He also emphasized the importance of resolving their recurring issue of losing wickets early.

“It was an excellent match, and we managed to post a good total. Taking wickets early is essential for us, and this issue has persisted from the previous series. It’s an area where we must improve. The batting in the final overs was commendable, particularly from Omarzai,” Rashid stated.

While defending a target of 189, Afghanistan’s bowlers effectively restricted Hong Kong to 94/9 in their 20 overs, securing a convincing victory.

“We possess quality spinners, which puts pressure on the opposition. When we score runs, the batters are compelled to take risks, giving us opportunities to take wickets. We aim to maintain a strong record while chasing as well,” Rashid added.

The Afghanistan captain described the decision to leave out experienced spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman as a ‘difficult choice,’ but reiterated that having multiple options enables him to explore various team combinations.

“Deciding on the playing XI is always a challenge. Leaving Mujeeb out was a tough decision, but sometimes you have to consider different combinations. The advantage is that I have options, which simplifies the process for me,” he concluded.
