Karachi Grapples with Deadly Traffic Accidents in 2024
Citizens of Karachi continue to face a perilous traffic situation, with accidents claiming the lives of at least 536 individuals in 2024, according to police reports released on Sunday. Tragically, 60 of these fatalities involved collisions with trucks.
This year, the city has seen numerous traffic incidents, many resulting in loss of life, which has led to public anger and instances of vehicles being set ablaze.
A similar event transpired today on Rashid Minhas Road, where two siblings were fatally struck, prompting an enraged crowd to ignite at least seven dumper trucks.
The victims were identified as 22-year-old Mahnoor and her 14-year-old brother, Ahmed Raza.
Providing a breakdown of accident statistics for the city, authorities reported that 25 individuals perished in accidents involving buses, 11 in mini-buses, six in coaches, and 48 in incidents involving trailers.
Additionally, 20 people died in accidents involving dumper trucks, 44 in water tankers, and six in accidents involving oil tankers.
The police also noted that 15 deaths occurred in van collisions, five in jeep accidents, and 58 in car accidents.
Among the total fatalities, 51 were women.
The repeated occurrence of high-speed dumper truck accidents, resulting in multiple deaths and injuries recently, has led officials to declare various safety measures.
This ongoing crisis has amplified the need for stricter application of existing traffic regulations and substantial enhancements to the city’s road infrastructure to avert future tragedies.
