Several major roads in Karachi were inaccessible for the third consecutive day on Wednesday due to heightened security measures. The closures follow protests that began Sunday after the assassination of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Reports indicate that eleven protesters lost their lives and several others were injured during a demonstration outside the US consulate in Karachi following the Iranian leader’s death.
At Mai Kolachi Road, barriers have been erected at the railway crossing, and a significant presence of traffic police is evident. Access is restricted to residents and individuals commuting to offices from Boat Basin towards Mai Kolachi, requiring them to present their national identity cards.
Shipping containers have been strategically placed on the PIDC Bridge, obstructing general traffic flow towards Jinnah Bridge and Mai Kolachi. The route from MT Khan Road to PIDC Road and Mai Kolachi has also been sealed off with barriers, with security personnel from the police and Rangers stationed at these points.
Similarly, commuters traveling from Jinnah Bridge towards Mai Kolachi or PIDC Road are encountering road closures, as these routes are currently blocked for regular traffic.
Residents living in the vicinity of Bilawal House and Boat Basin have been advised to seek alternative routes. They can use Clifton Bridge and then proceed towards Metropole and II Chundrigar Road. Another option available is to travel via Saddar to reach their destinations.
Significant traffic congestion was observed on II Chundrigar Road on Tuesday due to these closures, and heavy traffic pressure continued on Wednesday with diversions still in effect.
Commuters approaching from Mauripur Road towards Boat Basin can utilize Jinnah Bridge to access II Chundrigar Road, from where they can take alternate routes to reach Clifton and Defence. An alternative is to travel via Kutiyana Memorial Hospital towards II Chundrigar Road and adjacent streets.
Traffic and local police officials are actively present at numerous locations, assisting commuters by providing information on diversions. Authorities have stated that personnel are deployed at various points throughout the city. For the latest updates on road conditions, citizens can contact the traffic police helpline at 1915.
These ongoing closures represent the third consecutive day of restrictions imposed in response to the prevailing security situation in Karachi.
