KMC to Fine Wrong-Way Drivers Rs15,000
The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has revealed intentions to levy a fine of Rs15,000 on motorists who are caught driving against the flow of traffic on the city’s major thoroughfares.
This action seeks to reduce traffic offenses and improve safety for the public and will be carried out by City Wardens.
The initiative is a result of instructions from Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab and the Karachi Task Force. A formal proposal to approve the fine will be presented at the next KMC council session for ratification and implementation.
Wahab stated that taking firm action against such violations is vital to avert incidents and guarantee more efficient traffic management. The KMC has requested all motorists and motorcyclists to follow traffic laws and work with law enforcement to help ensure road safety throughout the metropolis.
Karachi experienced a troubling increase in road mishaps in February 2025, which led to the deaths of 73 individuals, counting eight women and five children. Furthermore, more than 700 people sustained critical injuries, with over 90 being women.
This concerning pattern has persisted, with total figures up to April 10 indicating that 138 individuals have died, including 16 women and 14 children, whereas over 1,500 have been injured, with more than 160 women included.
According to authorities at the Edhi Information Bureau, these figures solely reflect severe injuries recorded at a few prominent tertiary-care medical facilities.
In actuality, over 500 individuals, predominantly motorcyclists, are transported daily to public and private healthcare facilities across the city with fractures and other injuries resulting from traffic incidents on Karachi’s progressively dangerous roads.
In February alone, the city averaged 2.5 deaths and 25 injuries daily, highlighting the escalating issue brought on by careless drivers, unrestricted movement of heavy dump trucks, and inadequate traffic control.
