Karachi Braces for Rising Temperatures, Heatwave Expected

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued an alert indicating that Karachi is anticipated to experience heightened heat intensity commencing this Sunday. Conditions resembling a heatwave are projected to materialize between April 20th and 23rd.

According to the weather authorities, the expected surge in temperatures is attributed to an alteration in wind patterns.

Furthermore, the PMD has also signaled that analogous heatwave conditions may potentially reemerge in other regions of Sindh province starting from April 24th.

The weather outlook for Karachi suggests hot and humid conditions persisting over the next day.

The city’s maximum temperature is predicted to fluctuate between 35 and 37 degrees Celsius, while the recorded minimum temperature stood at 26.5 °C. With humidity levels at 77%, a heightened sense of discomfort is being felt throughout the metropolis.

Intermittent strong gusts are also probable during this timeframe. Sea breezes are sustaining a moderate pace of 12 kilometres per hour.

This weather advisory follows statements made last week by PMD spokesperson Anjum Nazir, who conveyed expectations of a heatwave in Karachi towards the close of the current month.

Anticipating that temperatures will exceed the norm from April through June, Nazir noted that heatwave-like conditions are expected to continue in South Punjab and various areas of Sindh.

The PMD has previously cautioned that intense heat could trigger dust and windstorms, which could cause damage to infrastructure such as power poles, vegetation, vehicles, and photovoltaic arrays.

Members of the public, particularly children, women, and older adults, are urged to limit direct sunlight exposure and maintain adequate hydration.

In contrast, the Met Office has indicated potential improvements in weather elsewhere in the country, suggesting that a westerly system may affect the northern regions, potentially bringing rain and hail until April 20th.
