Earthquake Shakes Karachi

Karachi was struck by another earthquake on Friday evening, with the country’s seismic monitoring center recording a magnitude of 2.8.

The National Seismic Monitoring Centre, a division of the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), stated that the earthquake’s point of origin was situated 13 kilometers southeast of Korangi, registering a depth of 4km.

The tremor occurred in the coastal metropolis at 5:28pm, according to the seismic monitoring center.

While there were no reports of destruction or casualties, residents experienced panic as a result of the seismic event.

According to PMD data, this latest occurrence brings the total of low-intensity tremors recorded in Karachi to 48 since the beginning of June.

Previously, Chief Meteorologist Ameer Hyder Leghari had indicated that the Landhi Fault Line has shown renewed activity after remaining dormant for several decades and is presently undergoing a phase of stabilisation.

Leghari suggested that structures near fault lines should have the capacity to endure seismic activity up to a magnitude of 6. He further mentioned that structural weaknesses are likely the cause of cracks that have been observed in some buildings.

Leghari added that a neighboring fault in the vicinity of Thana Bula Khan is also contributing to the ongoing seismic activity.
