George Groves Weighs In: Joshua vs. Fury a Toss-Up

Former British boxer George Groves has assessed the potential Anthony Joshua versus Tyson Fury clash as a highly competitive encounter.

Tyson Fury’s retirement, announced in January after his second successive loss to Oleksandr Usyk in 2024, adds complexity to the situation.

Despite previous obstacles, Joshua remains optimistic about a future showdown with Fury, a fight anticipated for several years.

Groves’ Analysis of Joshua and Fury

Reflecting on Joshua’s recent defeat by Daniel Dubois, Groves suggested the knockout may have had considerable psychological and physical repercussions.

Joshua’s Setback Against Dubois

“Joshua’s recent defeat against Daniel Dubois was quite telling. Dubois executed his strategy effectively that night, pressuring Joshua, who likely intended a more gradual start,” Groves commented.

“He couldn’t adapt, and suffered a significant knockout on a major stage late in his career, indicating substantial wear and tear,” he elaborated.

Fury’s Recent Performance

Following his analysis of Joshua, Groves pointed to Fury’s own sequence of challenging fights, explaining his view that the matchup is unpredictable.

“However, Fury has also experienced consecutive difficult fights, perhaps three if we consider the Francis Ngannou fight, which was not particularly convincing. He was fortunate to secure the win,” Groves noted.

“Subsequently, he suffered two defeats to Oleksandr Usyk. This could be as mentally taxing as Joshua’s loss to Dubois. I believe it’s an evenly matched contest. Fury possesses greater size, agility, boxing acumen, and hand speed,” he added.

Groves disagreed with Carl Froch’s prediction of an easy victory for Fury.

“Joshua remains a formidable athlete with exceptional punching power and extensive experience in high-stakes fights. The outcome will hinge on performance, determination, and remaining reserves on the night. I disagree with Froch; I don’t foresee a straightforward win,” Groves concluded.
