Indianapolis Colts Owner Jim Irsay Passes Away at 65

INDIANAPOLIS: Jim Irsay, the esteemed owner and CEO of the Indianapolis Colts, peacefully passed away in his sleep on May 21, at the age of 65. He had been at the helm of the NFL franchise since 1997.

Taking over from his father, Robert Irsay, the former owner, Jim continued the family’s legacy with the team. The Colts organization released a statement acknowledging his demise, conveying their deep sorrow.

Colts Chief Operating Officer Pete Ward stated, “We are heartbroken to announce the passing of our beloved Owner & CEO, Jim Irsay, in his sleep this afternoon.”

He further added, “Jim’s commitment to the Indianapolis Colts, his generosity, dedication to the community, and above all, his affection for his family were unparalleled.”

Irsay leaves behind his three daughters—Carlie Irsay-Gordon, Casey Foyt, and Kalen Jackson—his former spouse and mother of his daughters, Meg Coyle, along with ten grandchildren.

Irsay’s eldest daughter, Carlie Irsay-Gordon, is anticipated to succeed him, having been actively involved in the team’s operations for several years. She previously substituted for her father during his NFL suspension in 2014, which followed a DWI arrest.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell also expressed his condolences to the Irsay family. Goodell remarked, “We were deeply saddened to learn of Jim Irsay’s passing today. Jim was a friend and a man deeply committed to his family, the game, the Colts, and the Indianapolis community.”

“He demonstrated integrity, passion, and care for the Colts’ players, coaches, and staff. His commendable efforts in support of mental health will be remembered. On behalf of the NFL, we offer our heartfelt condolences to Jim’s daughters, their families, and his numerous friends throughout the league.”

Irsay had been managing health concerns since December 2023, when he was hospitalized after being discovered unresponsive. Initial reports indicated a potential overdose, but the Colts later clarified that he was receiving treatment for a “severe respiratory illness.” Irsay later cited complications from a leg injury as the cause of his hospitalization.

The Colts have not yet revealed the official cause of death.
