McGrath Advises Bumrah on Managing Workload for Optimal Fitness
CHENNAI: Glenn McGrath, the former Australian pace bowler, suggested on Friday that Jasprit Bumrah, the spearhead of India’s pace attack, should take frequent breaks. This advice aims to ensure his continued fitness, as his unusual bowling style makes him more susceptible to injuries if not carefully managed.
During the series against England, Bumrah participated in only three Test matches. He was excused from the final match held at The Oval due to medical advice and was subsequently released from the squad.
While attending a local function in Chennai, McGrath spoke with the Indian media, emphasizing how crucial it is to manage Bumrah’s workload. He also urged the other members of India’s fast bowling unit to offer greater support.
McGrath stated, “You want your premier bowler in action, and naturally, he’ll always want to bowl. However, if he’s limited to short spells, the batting side will feel they only need to survive three or four overs.”
He added, “The effectiveness of this strategy relies heavily on the other bowlers. They need to elevate their performance to prevent Bumrah from having to consistently bowl lengthy spells.”
McGrath pointed out that Bumrah’s distinct action puts additional strain on his physique.
“His bowling motion is unlike that of most fast bowlers. He approaches with a measured run-up, then rapidly accelerates through the crease in his final strides.
“He exhibits hyperextension and exceptional wrist positioning, which contribute to his effectiveness but also render him vulnerable to injuries,” he clarified.
McGrath recommended that Bumrah utilize an extended off-season to enhance his physical strength in preparation for the demands of Test cricket.
McGrath commented, “By dedicating the off-season to rigorous training and improving his physical condition, Bumrah can better withstand the demands placed on his body.”
“His unique technique causes him to release the ball much closer to the batsman. While he possesses many unique attributes, when he executes correctly, everything aligns perfectly. He has identified a method that suits him well.”
