Italy Stuns Scotland, Tops Europe Region Final Standings
The Italian men’s cricket team is on the verge of qualifying for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup for the first time after a surprising 12-run victory over Scotland in the Europe Region Final. The match, the seventh of the series, took place at Sportpark Westvliet.
Italy currently leads the standings with five points from three games played.
Match Summary
Opting to bat first after winning the toss, Italy posted a total of 167/6 in their 20 overs. Emilio Gay led the charge with a rapid half-century, scoring 50 runs off 21 balls, including six fours and two sixes. Harry Manenti contributed a steady 38, while Grant Stewart added a valuable 44 not out from 27 deliveries towards the end of the innings, hitting two fours and three sixes.
For Scotland, Michael Leask was the most effective bowler, taking 3/18 in his three overs. Chris Greaves, Mark Watt, and Brad Currie each claimed one wicket.
In response, Scotland managed 155/5 in their 20 overs, despite a half-century from George Munsey. Munsey scored 72 off 61 balls, with four fours and two sixes. He formed a 105-run partnership with captain Richie Berrington, but Manenti dismissed him in the 18th over when the team needed 34 runs from 16 balls.
Berrington remained unbeaten with 46 off 37 balls but couldn’t guide Scotland to victory.
Manenti was the standout performer for Italy, taking all five Scottish wickets for 31 runs in his four overs.
