Pakistan Advocates for Peaceful Resolution of Iran Nuclear Issue at UN

Pakistan has reaffirmed its firm support for a peaceful resolution concerning the Iran nuclear matter, encouraging all relevant parties to recommence discussions and abstain from actions that might intensify regional tensions.

Speaking at a UN Security Council (UNSC) session focused on the 2015 Iran nuclear agreement, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), Pakistan’s Representative to the UN, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, stated that “dialogue and diplomacy offer the only realistic path forward.”

He emphasized, “The prevailing sentiment suggests that dialogue, diplomacy, and constructive engagement represent the sole feasible strategy.”

Pakistan’s declarations at the United Nations occurred shortly after an announcement from the U.S. President regarding an agreement between Israel and Iran for a “complete and total cessation of hostilities.”

The U.S. president declared the truce effective following criticisms directed at Israel and Iran for alleged ceasefire breaches. Numerous nations, including Russia, France, Germany, and Saudi Arabia, have expressed their support for the declared ceasefire following a nearly two-week conflict between the Middle Eastern adversaries.

Reports indicate that the conflict has resulted in casualties of at least 24 fatalities and over 1,000 injuries in Israel, while strikes within Iran have reportedly caused approximately 974 deaths and 3,458 injuries, as per information from Washington-based human rights organizations.

During his address to the UNSC, Ambassador Ahmad welcomed the ceasefire between Iran and Israel, underscoring its importance as a crucial chance to reinstate diplomatic efforts.

“Pakistan unequivocally supports initiatives aimed at restoring peace and avoiding actions that could precipitate further conflict, and we firmly endorse a sustained ceasefire in the region.”

He highlighted the importance of enabling the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to conduct its responsibilities without obstruction.

He commented, “That perspective remained pertinent during the negotiations between Iran and the United States, facilitated by Oman, until it faced severe disruption due to the unlawful and illicit military actions targeting Iranian nuclear facilities protected by IAEA safeguards.”

The ambassador stressed that these actions not only violated international law but also disrupted the IAEA’s essential verification processes in Iran.

He further mentioned Pakistan’s consistent stance since the onset of the conflict and its proactive involvement behind the scenes, with the nation’s leadership engaging with key stakeholders in the crisis.

He affirmed that all disputes should be addressed in accordance with the UN Charter and international legal standards.

Ahmad reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to the JCPOA or an equivalent agreement acceptable to all parties, particularly given the original deal’s impending expiration in October 2025.

“We restate our dedication to resolving the Iran nuclear issue through peaceful means, diplomatic interaction, and sustained dialogue,” he affirmed.

“Pakistan is in favor of maintaining and renewing the JCPOA, or replacing it with a similarly robust agreement that garners consensus from all parties, before its expiration in October 2025.”

He called upon all nations to exercise prudence and maintain open diplomatic channels, stating, “This is a moment for composed decision-making and earnest dialogue, rather than heightened antagonism.”
