PM Sharif Responds to Islamabad Flooding
Following severe rainfall that caused a flood-like situation across Islamabad, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has addressed the matter. The intense rainfall led to overflowing storm drains and significant urban flooding in residential zones.
Sources indicate that floodwaters infiltrated residences, causing property damage, submerging vehicles, and devastating crops in Kuri village.
The primary cause of the flooding was rainwater runoff from the Margalla Hills, which caused local streams to overflow early in the morning.
The Prime Minister has instructed the district administration and the Capital Development Authority (CDA) to commence immediate rescue efforts, ensure water drainage, and implement protective measures in vulnerable low-lying regions adjacent to rivers and canals.
He also directed health officials to be prepared for potential outbreaks of waterborne illnesses. A dedicated committee has been established to oversee aid efforts and ensure public well-being.
In the National Assembly, PPP MNA Shahida Rehmani addressed the issue, raising concerns about the unregulated development of housing societies in natural waterways near the Margalla Hills and Soan River. She stated that this has exacerbated the flooding problem in the capital.
Sherry Mansab Ali, the Minister of State for Climate Change, responded by stating the government is actively engaged in removing encroachments, conserving floodwater for reuse, and addressing challenges resulting from shifting climate patterns.
It is important to note that the ongoing monsoon rains throughout Pakistan have resulted in at least 303 fatalities.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) reports that the deceased include 104 men, 57 women, and 141 children, while the injured comprise 278 men, 207 women, and 242 children.
Furthermore, the NDMA spokesperson confirmed that the rains have damaged 1,678 homes and resulted in the deaths of 428 livestock.
