Tim David Fined for Showing Dissent During T20I

Australian batter Tim David has been penalized with a fine amounting to 10 percent of his match fee. This disciplinary action follows a Level 1 breach of the ICC Code of Conduct during the fifth T20I against the West Indies, held in St. Kitts on July 28.

David was adjudged to have contravened Article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel. This article addresses “showing dissent at an Umpire’s decision during an International Match.”

The specific incident occurred during the fifth over of Australia’s innings. A delivery from West Indies bowler Alzarri Joseph, which traveled down the leg side, was not signaled as a wide ball by the umpire.

In response, the 29-year-old David displayed his disagreement by stretching his arms outwards in a gesture of protest. He then proceeded to walk in the direction of the umpire while maintaining the extended arm position.

Consequently, one demerit point has been added to David’s record. This represents his initial offense within a 24-month timeframe.

David acknowledged the infraction and accepted the proposed sanction from match referee Reon King of the Emirates ICC International Panel of Match Referees. As a result, a formal hearing was deemed unnecessary.

The charges were brought forth by on-field umpires Zahid Bassarath and Leslie Reifer, along with third umpire Deighton Buttler, and fourth umpire Gregory Brathwaite.

Level 1 breaches entail a minimum penalty of an official reprimand and a maximum penalty of 50 percent of a player’s match fee, in addition to the assignment of one or two demerit points.

Despite this incident, David made a valuable contribution of 30 runs during the match. His efforts played a role in Australia’s narrow three-wicket victory, which also secured a 5-0 series sweep against the West Indies.
